Open the collection kit and place the swab and the transport media on a clean surface.  If the patient is wearing a mask, remove the mask to perform the procedure and replace it when done.

Tilt the patient’s head back and insert the swab into the nostril to a visual depth equal to that of the opening of the ear.  Leave the swab in place for approximately 3 seconds.  Slowly remove the swab while rotating.
